How to get MBBS Admission under NRI Quota in 2026-27?

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Government of India, conducts centralized online counseling for MBBS admission in Deemed Medical Universities across India. All NRI, OCI, and foreign national candidates who qualify in NEET-UG must participate in this process to secure a seat under the NRI quota.

Here’s a step-by-step guide explaining the complete counseling process:

Step 1: NEET-UG Qualification

The first and most important step is to qualify for the NEET-UG examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifying percentile are eligible to participate in the MCC counseling.

NEET-UG score determines your eligibility and merit position for seat allotment in Deemed Universities. Both Indian and NRI/OCI candidates must appear for NEET; there are no exemptions under the NRI quota.

Step 2: Registration on MCC Portal

Once the NEET results are announced, eligible candidates must register on the official MCC website: https://mcc.nic.in.

Click on the “New Registration” link under the UG Medical Counseling (Deemed University) section. Fill in your personal details, NEET roll number, and rank information. Choose the NRI category while filling out the form. Pay the required non-refundable registration fee and security deposit (usually $1000 or ₹2 lakh depending on category).

Note: The security deposit is refundable after the counseling session if no seat is allotted.

Step 3: Conversion from Indian to NRI Category (If Applicable)

Candidates who initially registered as Indian citizens but wish to apply under the NRI quota can request a category conversion during the counseling period.

  • MCC opens a specific window for NRI category conversion.
  • You’ll need to send valid NRI-related documents such as passport, visa, sponsorship letter, and relationship proof to MCC via email.
  • After verification, MCC will change your category to “NRI” for further rounds.

Step 4: Choice Filling and Locking

After successful registration, candidates must fill in their college preferences for MBBS admission under the NRI quota.

  • Browse the list of Deemed Medical Universities available on the portal.
  • Select colleges based on fee structure, ranking, and location preference.
  • You can fill in multiple choices and rearrange them in order of priority.
  • Once satisfied, lock your choices before the deadline to confirm submission.

💡 Tip: Always fill more colleges to increase your chances of allotment.

Step 5: Seat Allotment Process

MCC conducts the seat allotment process based on:

  • Candidate’s NEET rank and score
  • College preference order
  • Seat availability under NRI quota

The seat allotment result is published online in the form of a Round 1, Round 2, and Mop-Up Round.

  • Candidates allotted a seat will receive a Provisional Allotment Letter from MCC, which must be downloaded for further reporting.

Step 6: Reporting to the Allotted College

Candidates who are allotted a seat must report physically to the respective Deemed University within the given time frame.
At the time of reporting, candidates must carry:

  • All original documents
  • NEET scorecard and admit card
  • Passport, visa, and NRI proof
  • Sponsorship letter (if applicable)
  • Demand Draft or Online Fee Receipt for payment of NRI fees

After successful document verification and payment of tuition fees, the candidate’s admission is confirmed by the institution.

Step 7: Upgradation and Subsequent Rounds

If you are not satisfied with your Round 1 allotment, you can choose to upgrade in Round 2 or participate in the Mop-Up Round for better options.

  • You must opt for “Willing to Upgrade” at the time of reporting.
  • Candidates who do not report in Round 1 are not eligible for Round 2.
  • The Mop-Up Round is the final opportunity to secure a seat in Deemed Universities for that academic year.

Step 8: Final Admission Confirmation

After the final allotment, the Deemed University uploads the candidate’s admission status on the MCC portal.

Once confirmed, the candidate officially becomes a part of the MBBS program

Key Points to Remember

  • MCC conducts counseling only for Deemed Universities, not for state colleges.
  • NRI candidates must keep their documents ready before registration.
  • Always check the official MCC schedule for important dates.
  • If a candidate fails to report within the given time, the seat will be forfeited.
