FMGE and NExT for Abroad MBBS Students — Complete 2026 Guide

What FMGE and NExT mean for Indian students who studied MBBS abroad: exam format, pass rates, internship rules, and registration pathway.

An NMC-approved abroad MBBS degree does not automatically let you practice in India — you must clear the licensing exam (FMGE today, NExT as it rolls out).

FMGE Overview

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination tests clinical knowledge aligned with Indian standards. Multiple attempts are allowed, but preparation during final-year abroad rotations saves years of rework.

NExT Transition

NExT (National Exit Test) is planned to unify UG licensing and PG entrance. Abroad graduates should track NMC notifications for eligibility, attempt limits, and internship requirements in India.

Internship and Registration

After passing FMGE/NExT, candidates typically complete a CRMI (compulsory rotating medical internship) in India before state medical council registration.

Plan Before You Fly

MedMentor360 includes FMGE/NExT prep planning in every abroad counselling package — choose countries and colleges with curriculum overlap to reduce licensing risk.
