GMU country guide

Looking for a good place to study medicine that’s not too far, not too expensive, safe, and has a good academic standing? Nepal could be a great option. Lots of Indian students prefer pursuing MBBS in Nepal every year, and it’s easy to see why. You can get a quality medical education there in a familiar cultural setting. Classes are in English, the food is similar to what you’re used to, the people are friendly, and you get top-notch experience in established hospitals.

Why Nepal for MBBS?

India and Nepal have a common culture and affordable quality medical studies. Nepal is one of the countries where Indian students can get the MBBS course. This is because the courses studied in Nepal have similarities with those in India, and all the medical universities in Nepal are recognized by the Medical Council of India/ National Medical Commission (NMC). This makes the process easy for graduates who wish to continue their careers in India. Also, the language used at institutions in Nepal is English, and some faculty members have years of working experience in their field to offer guidance to students during training.

Key Reasons to Choose Nepal for MBBS:

  • Language is not a problem, as people speak Hindi and English.
  • Tuition fees are considerably less than the fees required at many private colleges in India.
  • All Indian students are exempt from writing either the IELTS or TOEFL.
  • The syllabus and examination processes used in Nepal are quite similar to those used in India.
  • Safety and Cultural similarity.
  • High pass percentage on the Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE).
  • Traveling to India is easy (Indian students don't need visas to enter Nepal).

Fees

Cost is usually the main concern, isn't it? Typically, how much would an entire MBBS cost in Nepal, is the question every student asks? For all the Indian students planning to study that course during 2026-27, they can expect to pay approximately ₹45 lakhs – ₹65 lakhs (or around NPR 72,000,000 to NPR 1,040,000,000 in approx. current exchange rate, 1 NPR = ₹0.625). Those who attend government-approved and/or older institutions will have lower tuition rates than students going to most private institutions.

Here is another example where it becomes easier to visualize by breaking down into year 1 versus years 2+

Year 1 can account for approximately 40-50% of your total costs due to higher initial fees. There are no hidden charges for capitation, however, you would be expected to pay the following to get registered at the university, like registration fee, lab fees, and sometimes an admission fee, which may vary from ₹1-₹2 lakh or approximately NPR 1.6-3.2 Lakhs.

Some colleges offer flexible payment plans that allow easy budgeting for your family. As far as the cost of attending private medical colleges in India is concerned, it is much more affordable. Generally, private medical colleges in India begin their prices at ₹1 Crore and go on above this mark depending on the donations made.
For the most recent fee structure, we would advise you to contact our professionals for the latest fee structure information.

You can also check the same on Medical Education Commission (MEC); however, the fees may vary by a few percent from year to year due to dollar vs. Rupee exchange rates and/or because of changes in government policy/regulations. The key answer to this question is that the cost of the program is very reasonable compared to India and other countries.

Nepal Infrastructure and Campus Environment

Infrastructure varies across colleges:

  • Top colleges have cool, up-to-date lecture halls; labs where you can dissect stuff; anatomy museums; libraries stocked with journals from all over the world; and well-stocked science labs. They're also connected to teaching hospitals with operating rooms and places to run tests.
  • Smaller or newer schools might have okay classrooms, but they won't have as many fancy facilities. How much hands-on experience you get depends on how busy their hospital is.
  • Many schools provide dorms for international students, but they're not all the same. Check out reviews and chat with current students if you can. Dorm food usually includes Indian options since many students are from India.
Cost of Living in Nepal for Students

Day-to-day living costs can vary greatly depending on where you are from and whether you are going there as a tourist or student. As a student in Nepal, you will find that your monthly budget for food is between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000 (NPR 16,000 - 32,000) in total.

A majority of colleges provide dormitory accommodation for ₹5,000 - 10,000 per month (NPR8,000 - 16,000) with mess facilities that serve Indian style meals. If you eat out or cook simple meals, then you can expect to spend an extra ₹3,000- ₹5,000 (NPR4,800 - 8,000) per month on food.

The cost of your utility bills is also very cheap due to the fact that utilities do not cost you much at all in Nepal (most dorms already include utilities in the dorm fee) or cost less than $1,000 (/NPR 1,600). Local transportation is also inexpensive in Nepal; whether you ride the local bus or use a taxi, you should not have to spend more than $600 a month to get to your destination.

Depending on your lifestyle, mode of travel, and the cost of living, it is reasonable to assume that you will spend between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 3,000 (Rs. 3,200 to Rs. 4,800) per month on books, paper, and other academic materials.

Five and a half years of study will cost Indian Rupees ₹6-10 lakhs (Nepalese Rupees 9,600,000 to 16,000,000) in total, depending on your level of comfort. Living in Kathmandu or Pokhara may be more expensive than in smaller towns like Bharatpur, but not nearly as expensive as living in a major city in India, and students who manage very well typically find that they can live within their normal monthly expenses in tier 2 cities in their home country.
